Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski Slated For Oct. 11 Affliction Show

fedor-no-more Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski Slated For Oct. 11 Affliction Show

According to Yahoo Sports, top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will face former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski, Oct 11 from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV.

Slated to take place just a stones trough away from UFC headquarters at the UNLV campus, Affliction will make its move on what has been traditionally UFC territory.

This dream match will look to keep the ball rolling for Affliction as it takes another step towards legitimacy.

Thomas & Mack Arena director Daren Libonati:

“We’re really excited to have Affliction in the building and particularly to have Fedor and all those other great names…That’s what we were working toward in those two (PRIDE) shows we did back then, but it never worked out. We always want to bring big events here, and any time you have Fedor in your building you have a big event.”

Fedor Emelianenko vs Andrei Arlovski Affliction fight slated for October 11

fedor emelianenko vs andrei arlovski affliction
Fresh off what many feel to be a major success with its first-ever show on July 19 dubbed, “Banned,” Affliction MMA will go for an encore in the backyard of the promotion that “banned” it in the first place.

Indeed, Affliction has its sights set on Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 11 for its next show, according to Yahoo!Sports.com. And anyone who’s anyone knows that “Sin City” is UFC turf — the organization that forbid its fighters to don the clothing company’s apparel at its events.

But who really cares about that because the same report confirms that former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski will challenge the last man to hold the Pride FC heavyweight strap, Fedor Emelianenko, likely for the Russian’s newly-won heavyweight WAMMA title in the main event of the evening.

It’s a dream match that ost fans have fantasized about for years.

And perhaps the only thing that can top that news is what ace the UFC pulls from its sleeve to once again counter this latest bold move. Perhaps it once again includes UFC Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva.

This is getting good. Real good.

Robbie Lawler vs Scott Smith video now on ProElite.com

lawler smith
Elite XC Middleweight Champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler and Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith slugged it out in Newark, N.J. on May 31 during the network mixed martial arts debut on CBS.

It was without a doubt on its way to becoming one of the best fights of the year before it ended because of an inadvertent eye poke, resulting in a disappointing no contest.

The outcome forced Elite XC officials to set up an immediate rematch, which will be the main event on CBS this Saturday in Stockton, Calif., during Elite XC: “Unfinished Business” event.

In case the excitement of their first fight has worn off for you — and this rematch doesn’t have you drooling with anticipation — ProElite.com has decided to provide a free video of Lawler vs. Smith I. You’ll be able to watch the epic back-and-forth battle as many times as you like from now until fight time on Saturday.

Famous Failures Who Defied Their Critics

The video below serves as a follow up to a past entry. Within that entry, I discussed the potential fault in taking someone else’s word for the way things should be.

There are different types of people in this world. Some automatically heed the advice of others without questioning it. They never search for their own answers. If so-and-so said so, it must be true. The puppet master is always right, as the follower is lost without someone or something to follow. Others (such as those highlighted in the video above) are too proud and stubborn, and rarely take someone else’s word. They will hear what others have to say, but hearing and believing are not the same.

I am a proud member of the latter group. I can’t imagine living any other way. I will gladly listen to the advice of others, but I don’t assume it to be true. I’d rather come to my own conclusion. No one lives inside my body. No one can tell me what I can or cannot do.

Even science isn’t always right. Humankind has a history of mistakes. Who knows what will happen in the next 100 years. I’m sure that future generations will look back and laugh at some of the ideas that we assumed to be true. And if you don’t have the patience to wait it out 100 years, start following a current scientific journal. Conflicting studies are regularly released. Who is right when one study “proves” fault in another? I’m sure both parties were pretty damn sure they had it right the first time around.

Often times, we are not as smart as we think. Humans are far from perfect. We all make mistakes and even the know-it-alls have been wrong before. When someone tells you what you can or cannot do, how do we know it isn’t one of those times when human error has reared its ugly head? Wouldn’t you rather find out for yourself?

As a kid, I remember hearing how children of divorced parents were more likely to have this problem, that problem, and then another problem. The list of problems seemed endless. According to these researchers, I was doomed. My first thought however was that they were full of sh*t. They don’t know me. They didn’t study me. I’m not like anyone else, so how can the results of others somehow determine what will happen to me?

This is how I thought as a kid, and in many ways I still have this mentality today. Some may say that I’m ignorant or stubborn, or a combination of both (and then some), but no one else lives my life, so I honestly don’t care. Why worry about what someone else thinks? Who cares what so-and-so said I can do?

As much as we know about the human body, there is far more that we still don’t know. The complexity of our inner workings stretch far beyond our own comprehension.

As a coach, I will gladly train the youngster who walks into the gym with an unstoppable mindset. I want the kid who will try to fly if I tell him he can. It is these people who often exceed their supposed potential (according to others).  Believing in yourself and going against the grain when necessary will often take you places that you’ll never reach otherwise.

As the legendary Babe Ruth once said,

It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.

UFC 88 fight card gets three official bouts added for Atlanta

UFC 88
It seems like it has taken forever, however the UFC today made official three more bouts for its “Breakthrough” pay-per-view (PPV) event, which will take place from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., on September 6.

There’s no real Earth-shattering news to report because we’ve already passed along the match ups to our readers weeks ago. Then again no fight is truly official until it appears on the promotion’s Web site in some way, shape or form.

Nonetheless, as previously reported “three of mixed martial arts’ biggest stars” will be in action in little more than one month, including Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson and Karo Parisyan. That’s in addition to, of course, the main event of the evening between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans.

Just a quick refresher for those who may have missed the earlier reports here at MMAmania.com: Franklin will return to the 205-pound division to take on Matt Hamill, Henderson is in-line to face submission specialist Rousimar Palhares, and Parisyan has a very tough test against Japanese import (and fellow Judo player), Yoshiyuki Yoshida.

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva was thought to perhaps defend his 185-title at the show; however, with a hand injury to likely opponent Yushin Okami it’s possible that he will now compete on an October card against Patrick Cote.

Nick Thompson: Two major lifetime milestones to collide in just 48 hours

Nick “The Goat” Thompson has the most important week of his life ahead of him. That statement could actually be the understatement of the century.

First, his five plus years in the professional mixed martial arts fight game will reach its pinnacle on Saturday night as he faces Jake Shields for the vacant Elite XC welterweight world title at “Unfinished Business” on CBS in front of millions across the nation.

Next, “The Goat” will attempt to reach a crescendo as a scholar as well. In fact, just two days after the biggest test of his career inside the cage he’ll tackle the biggest test of his life outside of it — the Minnesota Bar Examination.

It’s a much different yet equally intimidating opponent. In fact, it’s almost unimaginable to think that Thompson could — in a 48-hour period — become a world champion in mixed martial arts and a licensed Minnesota state attorney of law.

If anyone is capable of pulling of the Triple Lindy-esque feat, however, it is Nick Thompson.

If you look back at his professional MMA record he has 46 fights to his credit. That means he has fought on average about once every five or six weeks since his debut. And let’s not forget he’s won 36 of those bouts, including 20 of his last 21.

That’s insane work ethic with a ridiculous success rate.

Either this guy isn’t human or he’s just physically and mentally superior to everybody else. How in the world does he do it?

“Very carefully,” joked Thompson during a recent conference call. “I get up in the morning about 6. I’m at the gym at 6 doing my strength and conditioning. Then I go straight to class. Then it’s back to the gym. I’ve got a little break room there. I study for a couple hours, train again, go home and study some more.”

I’m tired just reading that.

There are limits to what the human brain and body can do, but apparently Nick Thompson isn’t aware of them. Beware Jake Shields: This guy might not be human … just ask Eddie Alvarez.
