Brian Stann: The Reluctant Hero

January 31st, 2010
Mike Russell, UFC - One word that will never be used to describe Brian Stann is "selfish". In spite of every obstacle he has determinedly driven through in his life and every accolade he has earned in his decorated military and mixed martial arts careers, Stann's arms remain too busy saluting and shaking the hands of the platoon of supporters who stand behind him to stop for a moment and pat himself on the back.

At Long Last, Ronys Torres Enters The Octagon

January 30th, 2010
Martins Denis, UFC - More than one year has passed since Ronys Torres, a native of Manacapuru city in Amazonas, Brazil, signed his name on the dotted line of a UFC contract. The expectations for the debut of this competitor with the 18-1 résumé (eight subs, eight TKOs / KOs and only two decisions) were high, because after being chosen as the best Brazilian fighter in 2008, Torres was going to show those outside Brazil what had made him so celebrated in his home country.

Rob Emerson Doing The Old School Proud

January 30th, 2010
Thomas Gerbasi, UFC - In traditional education, the names are familiar - Shakespeare for English majors, Aristotle for those studying philosophy, and Copernicus for students of astronomy. In mixed martial arts, Rob Emerson's schooling was served by 'The Rock', 'Babalu', "Ximu", and a man ominously dubbed 'The King of The Streets.'

Castillo and Pettis Fired Up For Battle

January 29th, 2010
Frank Curreri, WEC - Danny Castillo did not weep after his last loss. But one of his trainers did. It wasn't Urijah Faber, but Master Thong, the seen-it-all Muay Thai specialist who had never been moved to tears by a fighter's performance until Castillo botched what seemed like certain victory last November against Shane Roller.

For Chael Sonnen its simple -”I have to win this fight”

January 29th, 2010
Chuck Mindenhall, UFC - How far has Chael Sonnen come? Eight years ago, on a desert reservation called Anza, somewhere in the middle of California between the barren outposts of Cathedral City and Borrego Springs, Sonnen stepped in the cage for the first time as a professional. We use the word professional loosely, because what ensued that day against Jason "Mayhem" Miller could be more rightly called a "fiasco."

Trigg Frank about the Future

January 28th, 2010
Mike Russell, UFC - Despite all of the pre-fight posturing and trash talk he has engaged in over his nearly 13-year mixed martial arts career, Frank Trigg is surprisingly honest about his place in the grand scheme of MMA.

Hague Leaving No Stone Unturned

January 27th, 2010
Mike Russell, UFC - In Greek mythology, Theseus is best remembered as the man who was able to overcome an obstacle that seemed impossible. When he was a teenager, Theseus' mother revealed that his destiny lay underneath a large boulder in a field near their house, and to claim it he would need to lift the rock, which would prove to be no easy task.

An American Psycho in Australia -Stephan Bonnar is back

January 26th, 2010
Chuck Mindenhall, UFC - Not to cue the violins or anything, but Stephan Bonnar hasn't won a fight in the Octagon since UFC 77 in October of 2007—or 33 cards, a change in Presidential administrations and 439 days ago (numbers based as of February 20, 2010, when he fights Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 110 in Australia). That's when he beat his friend Eric "Red" Schafer with a ruthless ground-and-pound assault. It's been tough sledding since that night in Cincinnati for one of the sport's most popular figures.
