Most Improved MMA Fighter of 2008

December 9th, 2008

2008 marked the return of the “Ruthless” one, Robbie Lawler who has landed himself our most improved mixed martial artist of the year.

One of the very few shining stars for the EliteXC was the improvement and break out year of Robbie Lawler. I remember a testosterone fueled kid that just wanted to let his hands fly and lacked the discipline to apply an effective game plan to beat several top name opponents. I watched him lose to Pete Spratt, Evan Tanner, Jason Miller, and lose an UGLY knockout to Nick Diaz. In the past two years, he’s shown a lot of maturity and poise to beat some of the industries top names in a very convincing fashion.

He’s KO’d Ninja Rua, Frank Trigg, and Scott Smith with good foot work, constant movement, and great patience. He’s defeated two grapplers and a slugger. These opponents are not Hall-Of-Fame fighters, but they are very accomplished, well decorated, and all very different in their disciplines. He’s been able to apply his strengths without exposing his shortcomings in a very methodical fashion and has vastly improved his sprawl-n-brawl tactics. His patience has allowed him to pick a part his opponents without absorbing unnecessary punishment and ultimately imposes his will to overwhelm the opposition with good power and solid accuracy. Hats off to Robbie Lawler for having a good year and a solid run since his stumble in 2006 to Jason Miller

MMA Quick Quote: Kimbo Slice is a turkey

November 29th, 2008

“Big, mean, bearded street fighter, an Internet You Tube sensation, gets a crack at a title in a hugely hyped mixed martial arts bout after only three pro fights, faces a last-minute replacement and — of course — has his big, mean, bearded head handed to him 14 seconds later. Snorrrrre.”

SI.com, which incorrectly states that Elite XCs Kimbo Slice was fighting for a title, nominates the Miami street brawler for a “2008 Turkey of the Year.” Slice was pimped front and center by the now defunct organization because of his YouTube.com exploits. And when he went down against Seth Petruzelli in just 14 seconds back in October he ultimately took down the whole promotion — the “StandGate” controversy surrounding the main event was essentially its death knell. Ocho Cinco, Al Davis, Mark Cuban, Roger Clemens and Jeremy Shockey are some of the other athletes who made the 23-member list.

KJ Noons the boxer defeats Alejandro Bogarin

November 17th, 2008

Former Elite XC Lightweight Champion KJ Noons made his return to the boxing ring a successful one with a unanimous decision victory over Alejandro Bogarin (8-6-3) last Thursday night at the Expo Center in El Monte, California.

Noons actually dropped Bogarin in the first frame, but could not finish him off. He did, however, dominate most of the match en route to the decision win, which was his first in the sport since defeating Anthony Cannon at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif., in June 2007 (also by unanimous decision).

Bogarin wasn’t necessarily the stiffest test for Noons in his return. He had previously been knocked out six times and was coming into this bout fresh off a first round knockout suffered at the hands of Francisco Santana in July.

Nonetheless, with the win Noons moves his professional boxing record to an impressive 8-1 with five knockouts.

It’s unclear at this time whether he’ll continue to box or make the move back to mixed martial arts following the demise of his previous employer, Elite XC. Even before the demise of Elite XC he was taking a break from MMA after being stripped of his 160-pound title because he and the organization couldn’t come to terms on a rematch with Nick Diaz.

But now that the promotion is no more it might not be long before he’s back in a cage fighting MMA. Clearly, whatever happens with the fighter contracts from Pro Elite Inc. will have a lot to do with the next step for KJ.

Regardless, it seems very likely we haven’t seen the last of him in either sport.

More agents join the stand against Showtime’s planned auction of ProElite fighter contracts

November 12th, 2008
Several of the top agents in the mixed martial arts industry released a joint press release earlier this week to declare their opposition of Showtime’s planned Nov. 17 auction of ProElite’s assets. They formed a united front due to the fact that some of the advertised assets for the auction include the contracts of the [...]

The Future Of EliteXC Free Agents

November 11th, 2008

Elite XC’s mainstream ride came to a permanent and unceremonious halt several weeks ago. The once promising upstart-mixed-martial-arts promotion declared bankruptcy, thus, joining the likes of failed fight companies like Pride and the IFL.

The organization had received increasing criticism for resembling the circus like WWE, rather than a respectable sports promotion. By pushing undeserving and over the hill stars, compounded with a lack of fighter depth, their demise was not surprising.

Amidst the chaos though, several talented and intriguing fighters remain in search of new homes. Some of these future free agents are world-class talents, others provide ratings, and a select few find their careers in jeopardy.

In order to decipher the best possible free agents, I have made a comprehensive list of the most viable Elite XC options.

Robbie Lawler

Elite Exec’s incumbent middleweight champion is an entirely different fighter than he was in the UFC. Gone is the undisciplined, one-dimensional brawler. A calculating, precise and well-rounded mixed martial artist has replaced him. Lawler’s game has evolved and combines lethal striking with solid wrestling. Still young at 26, Lawler’s career is on the rise. With an array of skills and a flair for dramatic fights, Big Rob will be a serious addition to any roster.

Kimbo Slice

The face of the defunct organization is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Youtube’s most famous street brawler elicits massive fan reaction and attracts quite a following, but he has been exposed as an inexperienced and pedestrian fighter. It appears as though Slice is too old to ever be a top contender, yet is still marketable enough so that he is a profitable commodity. While the UFC could exploit his popularity, it would hurt its credibility in the process. More likely, the Kimbo Slice show will be taken overseas to Japan, where less skilled fighters with a menacing look have been successful in the past (Bob Sapp). Either way, it seems for now as though Slice’s 15 minutes of fame are almost up.

Jake Shields

The Gracie trained jiu-jitsu fighter is a highly sought after free agent. His impressive 11-fight winning streak and slick ground game make him one of the best welterweights in the world. Shields has also voiced interest in competing at 185, which allows organization flexibility in crafting the best possible fights. Although receiving decent exposure from Elite XC, his fights lacked real excitement so his drawing power is still relatively low. But, his talent is too great to ignore and the UFC is the most logical destination for him.

Gina Carano

The woman who thrust female MMA onto a national platform is in a precarious position. There are few organization that have a steady women’s division, fewer with notable opponents, and even fewer with deep enough pockets to pay Carano her proper due. Yet, she is one of the most popular athletes in the sport, is easily one of the most marketable and attracts an entirely new demographic. That kind of ratings power is a valuable asset for any company and should be enough to get her signed. Additionally, Carano can truly fight and has taken part in fan-pleasing bouts. A potential showdown against rival Cyborg Santos was quickly becoming a highly anticipated main event. It would be a shame for her fighting prowess to go to waste because nobody wants to invest in the development of women’s MMA. Dana White, step your game up! Can anybody say, Ultimate Fighter, Women’s Edition?

The Heavyweights

Elite XC truly began to cultivate three up and coming heavyweights that are deserving of recognition amongst the crop of free agents. Antonio Silva is an established presence and Brett Rogers and Dave Herman are rising stars.

Silva is a giant serving one-year steroids suspension, but Rogers and Herman are young and ready. Rogers gained notoriety for calling out Kimbo Slice and for his propensity for first round TKO’s (see James Thompson and Jon Murphy). He appears increasingly more polished with experience and would be a nice talent to cultivate for a thin UFC division.

I attended Indiana University with Herman where he was a dominant wrestler. With no consistent formal training, Herman is a very raw prospect. Still, the guy is incredibly agile for his size and can really move. He is very limber and extremely powerful. The 23-year-old is an infant in the sport and should be brought along slowly.

All three fighters would provide quality depth for any organization.

Other Notables

Nick Diaz, KJ Noons, Joey Villasenor and Rafel Cavalcante.

Diaz is a MMA veteran who has fought across the globe. Noons is a younger fighter more recognized for his controversial relationship with Elite XC than his actual fighting. Villasenor is an exciting middleweight who is well rounded, but not exceptional.

The real prize here is Cavalcante. Hailing from Brazil, the 28-year-old is a BJJ fighter who trains with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Anderson Silva. At 6’2, the former heavyweight is a massive specimen at 205. His striking has continually improved, which compliments a grappling background and established ground game. If he catches on with a major promotion, look for him to turn some heads.

Pro Elite attempts to stop CBS and Showtime public auction

November 7th, 2008

We reported earlier this week about the intentions of Showtime Networks Inc. to host a public auction on November 17 with whatever remains of Pro Elite Inc., including the video library, fighter contracts and other items.

Pro Elite Inc. was indebted to the premium cable network to the tune of 6.3 million dollars, which was accumulated through various loans. Showtime is apparently under the impression that because Pro Elite defaulted on the loans that the company has the right to take possession of its most valuable assets moving forward.

Pro Elite, however, sees it differently. In fact, according to the Media Daily News the organization plans to take legal action to try and stop the auction from happening.

Here’s a snip:

“With Showtime primed to sell its assets, a mixed martial arts promoter isn’t going down without a fight. ProElite, which has aired MMA matches on the pay cable network, said Thursday that it plans to block the public auction.”

Clearly, there’s some behind the scenes work for the two parties legal teams to sort through before we hear anything definitive on this matter.

Since the demise of the Elite XC, the fighters who were under contract with them have been left scratching their heads trying to figure out what to do next. Several of them, including Nick Diaz, have filed a breach of contract complaint in attempts to become free agents after 30 days.

Pro Elite, on the other hand, has denied filing for bankruptcy and claims it will continue on with business as usual in 2009, meaning its fighters would still be responsible for fulfilling their contracts.

The relationship between CBS/Showtime and Pro Elite Inc. does not appear to be so rosy these days. And yesterday there were reports that the California State Athletic Commission had suspended the company’s promotional license.

Therefore, if the organization does indeed want to move forward with operations, those are at least two major hurdles standing in their way.

Clearly all this chaos doesn’t appear to be leading toward a happy ending for anybody. These two sides could be in store for a long drawn out legal mess.

Showtime to sell select ProElite assets at November 17 public auction

November 5th, 2008

The remains of ProElite — the parent company of Elite XC — will soon be for sale via public auction courtesy of Showtime Networks Inc., just one month after shutting its doors following its inability to secure additional funding to keep the promotion afloat.

After its biggest star, Kimbo Slice, lost in just 14 seconds to replacement journeyman Seth Petruzelli in front of 4.5 million people on CBS, Elite XC had apparently been hit with a knockout blow of its own.

The main event fight influencing controversy that surrounded the “Heat” CBS event scared away what few investors it had at CBS and Showtime. Left with the nearly $60 million in debt EliteXC had already piled up in the less than two years since the organization’s creation, ProElite was left with little choice but to declare bankruptcy.

Now Showtime is hoping to salvage what value still remains in the promotion by offering its tape library and fighter contracts to the highest bidder, as outlined in the public notice of its pending auction.

Notice is hereby given that the Collateral (as defined below) will be sold by Showtime Networks Inc. (“Showtime”) at a public sale on November 17, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific Standard Time) at the offices of Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, 350 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90071. The term “Collateral” means all of ProElite, Inc.’s (“ProElite”), Real Sport, Inc.’s (“Real Sport”), ProElite.com’s (“ProElite.com”), EliteXC Live’s (“EliteXC”) and King of the Cage, Inc.’s (“KOTC”; each of ProElite, Real Sport, ProElite.com, EliteXC and KOTC, a “Debtor” and collectively, the “Debtors”) right, title and interest in, to and under, whether now owned or hereafter acquired by such Debtor, all present and after acquired personal property of such Debtor, whether tangible or intangible, wherever located and of whatever nature. The Collateral includes all contracts between any Debtor and mixed martial arts fighters (including, but not limited to, Kevin Ferguson a.k.a. “Kimbo Slice”, Gina Carano, Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler, Frank Shamrock, Antonio Silva, Brett Rogers, Dave Herman, Scott Smith, Nick Diaz, Cristiane Venancio Justino a.k.a. “Chris Cyborg”, Eddie Alvarez, Yves Edwards and Wilson Reis) and all of each Debtor’s video library, still photographs and home videos (e.g., DVDs and VHS tapes). The Collateral will be sold to the highest qualified bidder in public on November 17, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific Standard Time) at the offices of Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, 350 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90071. The Collateral will be sold on an “as-is, where-is” basis, without recourse, warranty or guarantee of any kind, express or implied, including as to title, possession, enforceability, validity, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Interested bidders who would like further information regarding the Collateral to be sold should contact Kent Sevener at (212) 708-3259. Showtime reserves its right to adjourn or cancel the sale at any time.

While unfortunate for the employees of ProElite, there is an upside to this from a fan’s perspective. There’s going to be a bunch of great fighters soon finding their way to other promotions and possibly ending up in fantasy or dream matches never before possible due to the lack of cooperation between entities.

It’s going to be interesting to see how many of these guys (and gals) end up in the UFC, Strikeforce, WEC, Affliction, or any of the other organizations out there.

Expect to see these guys beefing up their rosters with names like Jake Shields, Eddie Alvarez, Nick Diaz, Antonio Silva, Rafael Feijao, Paul Daley, KJ Noons, Wilson Reis, Cyrille Diabate, and countless others.

Who knows … maybe even Kimbo Slice.

In the end, the talent was there near the top … it just wasn’t enough to compensate for all the other shortcomings and struggles that upstart mixed martial arts promotions face attempting to get off the ground.

Elite XC joins Pride FC, International Fight League (IFL) and World Fighting Alliance (WFA) as recent MMA organizations that were forced to fold.

Hopefully, the list ends there.

EliteXC Claiming Its Not Dead, Holding Fighter Contracts

November 3rd, 2008

In a surprising turn in the EliteXC saga, Lawyers for EliteXC have responded to fighters 30 day breach of contract notices, stating they are not done and will be holding a fight in 2009, according to GracieFighter.com.

EliteXC representatives have vowed that they will continue operations and will be planning a show in early 2009. Most of the major EliteXC fighters under contract have been notified.

Lead counsel for the organization has informed us that contrary to popular beleif, EliteXC has not filed for bankruptcy and has merely scaled down their staff.

This will be a setback for all EliteXC fighters currently under contract as they will be unable to fight in other organizations without the express written permission of EliteXC. Barring a judicial ruling, EliteXC fighters could be hampered from signing with another organization.

However, Nick Diaz will be able to fight in Japan if terms are agreed upon with a Japanese organization due to a previous agreement with EliteXC. It is assumed that Eddie Alvarez will also be able to fight in the Far East without any EliteXC restrictions due to his previous contract with Dream.

This is likely a stall tactic by EliteXC officials to sell off the company or possibly gain some additional funding. Whatever it is, EliteXC better figure it out soon so their fighters don’t have to sit on the shelf.
