AFFLICTION WRAP UP AND JOHN’S BETTING RESULTS

AFFLICTION WRAP UP AND JOHN’S BETTING RESULTS

By John Gagne

Tonight we saw Fedor KO Arlovski in devastating fashion. While Josh Barnett took a little longer than expected to get the W. Is he ready for Fedor? After this performance, I would have to say no. “Baby Fedor” has turned out to be nothing more than hype. Failing to live up to his nickname. On the other hand we saw a great performance from Paul Buentello. This should be a sign to Affliction to step up the competition. Dany Lauzon dominated in his fight. I still hope for the Horodecki fight down the road. We also saw Rogerio Noguiera put on a great show against V-Mat. Sadly I think its safe to say, Sokoudjou has lost all potential to be a contender. At least he until he learns some submission defense. Upset of the night goes to my money making pick, Vitor Belfort. His vicious KO has propelled Vitor into the top ten for sure. I will go on a limb and say two things. First Vitor will get back in the UFC sometime in the next year. Second if Anderson Silva retires, I think if he makes it back to UFC he could be the middleweight champ. This obviously depends on the UFC’s interest in dealing with Vitor, and his ability to be consistently inconsistent.

My bets tonight went quite well for me. I won eight out of the eleven fights. Out of the three I lost I bet two. This makes me 15 for 21, an average of 71%. Over the last two MMA events, UFC 93 and Affliction “Day Of Reckoning.” Out of the six I lost I only bet three. Making my winning percentage 86%. I will look to hit the 90% mark tomorrow night with the WEC event. Check back for John’s picks and betting advice.

Fedor Vs. Arlovski

By John Gagne

This fight is one that many MMA fans have desired over the last 3 years. Ever since Fedor was the King of Pride (Well all of MMA) and Arlovski was the champ of the UFC. We have hoped and dreamed of this marquis match up.

We all know both men come from a Sambo background. Both men also have extensive striking training and experience. Two main factors will play key rolls in this fight. The first and most important being striking, followed by takedowns and takedown defense.

The striking factor would have been clear-cut 3 years ago, but today it is a little fuzzier. Fedor has amazing power and a chin that rivals many anvils. He does however loop his punches and has been known to drop his hands while throwing those big punches. This has never been exposed due to the fact that the first punch knocks his opponent loopy. If Arlovski’s boxing training is going the way the videos show and his trainer says. He should have great head, foot and body movement, slipping Fedor’s punches and countering. All this boxing training may also be Andrei’s Achilles heal. If he is over confident and believes he can out box Fedor, going toe to toe in a slugfest, he will be KO”D. If he uses it to be smart, elusive and evasive, he has one of the best chances of any other contenders against Fedor.

Takedowns and takedown defense in my opinion, will win this fight. If Fedor gets Andrei down he may be in for a world of hurt. Andrei does have good submissions, but against Fedor they will be meaningless for him. Now if Andrei can prevent the takedown, and stay on his feet picking Fedor apart we may be in for a long fight. On the other hand if for some reason Andrei takes Fedor down. This could be very bad for Andrei, Fedor has amazing submissions off his back. Guard is not a place Andrei likes to punch from. If he does take Fedor down I doubt he will hold the position. If this point of the fight ever comes and Andrei is getting the best of the striking I am sure he will let Fedor up.

Bottom line here is that Fedor is just the man. Someone may beat Fedor some day, but it will not be Andrei Arlovski. Fedor is better version of Arlovski and way more dominant. This fight has the potential to be exciting and live up to everyone’s expectations. It also has the potential for a quick finish as well as a drawn out boring fight. I am taking Fedor by TKO in the late second or third round. If I were to bet on this fight it would have to be big money, or the return would not be worth the risk. However if you decided to parley this fight with a few other lopsided fights you may get a decent pay out.

Fedor Emelianenko responds to Andrei Arlovski, Freddie Roach, and Dana White in exclusive interview with 5 Oz. of Pain

January 8th, 2009
There are just 17 days until Fedor Emelianenko defends his WAMMA heavyweight title against former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski during Affliction and M-1’s “Day of Reckoning” on January 24 in Anaheim, California. Despite having recorded victories in the past over the likes for former PRIDE and interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, former UFC [...]

Fedor Emelianenko responds to disparaging remarks made by Arlovski trainer Freddie Roach

January 8th, 2009

Props: Five Ounces of Pain

“Sometimes it is a trainer’s job to point out weaknesses in his fighter’s opponents, and sometimes it is a trainer’s job to convince his fighter that his opponent has weaknesses…We are not boxing and we are not fighting Sambo. We fight MMA…maybe Andrei is trying to convince himself that I have been weakened in some way, but it is no matter…The only thing I am 100 percent sure about is that I will be 100 percent ready to fight MMA against Andrei, and that is the only thing I care about right now.”

– Current WAMMA heavyweight champion and Affliction headliner Fedor Emelianenko responds to recent disparaging remarks made by world renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach, who has been working with Andrei Arlovski over the past year or so to help him improve his striking. Roach called “The Last Emperor” “flat-footed” with “no technique.” He also claimed the former PRIDE heavyweight champion would be knocked out if he “fought like a man.” Emelianenko is currently training in his Russian home city of Stary Oskol for his upcoming showdown with Andrei Arlovski at “Day of Reckoning” on January 24.

Fans invited to attend championship ring presentation for WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko

January 7th, 2009

The World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) announced Wednesday that is has scheduled an official ring presentation ceremony involving current WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko for Friday, January 23.

The public will be able to see Fedor receive his championship ring at Honda Center in Anaheim, California at 3 p.m. PT during weigh-ins for Affliction and M-1’s “Day of Reckoning” event.

Emelianenko became the first-ever holder of the WAMMA heavyweight championship after submitting former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia during Affliction’s first-ever event last July.

In addition to the WAMMA championship belt, a WAMMA championship ring was also commissioned by WAMMA from Tiffany’s. The ring was custom designed in the same manner in which the famed jewelry company produces championship rings for the NFL’s Super Bowl champions.

“We couldn’t be more proud of having Fedor Emelianenko represent WAMMA as its first-ever heavyweight champion,” said WAMMA Chief Operating Officer Michael Lynch. “Fedor is not only a world class fighter, but he is a world class person. He has always carried himself as a professional and comes from an old school mentality in that he prefers to let his actions speak louder than words.”

Fedor’s opportunity to bask in the glow of the ring ceremony could be short-lived, as the next day (Jan. 24) he is set to defend his WAMMA heavyweight title at “Day of Reckoning” vs. Andrei Arvloski, a former UFC heavyweight champion.

“Arlovski could very well be the toughest test of Fedor’s career,” Lynch began, “With an undercard shown live on HDNet and a stacked main event on PPV, Fedor’s WAMMA Championship defense will be the highlight of a superb night of fights during Affliction and M-1’s “Day of Reckoning” on January 24th.”

Also scheduled for Affliction and M-1’s “Day of Reckoning” is a heavyweight clash between Josh Barnett and Gilbert Yvel. Affliction Entertainment Vice President Tom Atencio has already gone on record to proclaim that the winner of Barnett vs. Yvel will face the Fedor/Arlovski winner.

But the day prior to the heavyweight fireworks, WAMMA cordially invites everyone to attend the championship ring presentation ceremony for WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko inside Honda Center in Anaheim, California on Friday, January 23 at 3 p.m. PT.
