Josh Koscheck Signs 20 Month Extension With The UFC

January 15th, 2009

The Ultimate Fighter 1 contestant and top welterweight Josh Koscheck has apparently came to terms with the UFC and signed a 20 month contract extension with the company, according to MMAMania.

“I feel that the extension is a good thing for me because I still have a job…The UFC is the only show in town. If I wasn’t with them I would be a struggling fighter looking for work in a struggling country.”

Koscheck also indicated that he would like to stay active, fighting as much as six times in 2009. Kos recently scored KO of the night honors after dropping Yoshiyuki Yoshida in the first round at UFC Fight Night 16 “UFC Fights For The Troops”.

“There are a lot of reasons I want to fight so much … I am in the gym all year around and I would rather be fighting then just training. The only way I make money is by fighting. So I told the UFC that I want to fight five or six times in 2009. I don’t care who I fight, anyone willing to step up I’ll be ready. I am a fighter and that’s what I love to do.”

“Every fight is a dangerous fight when your in the UFC … I have to train hard and not give this kid a chance to make his name off of me. The upside to fighting Paulo is that I get to fight!”

“I want to fight five to six times this year — I’ll be very unhappy if the UFC can’t get me fights … I am happy to be back and I’m ready to fight.”

Report: Josh Koscheck signs 20-month contract extension with the UFC

January 15th, 2009
The long-term future of welterweight title contender Josh Koscheck in the UFC was called into question this past November after UFC President Dana White became embroiled in a very public feud with Koscheck’s management at Zinkin Entertainment and trainers at the American Kickboxing Academy. However, Koscheck and the UFC will continue to work together with the [...]

Josh Koscheck inks 20-month contract extension with UFC; Eager to fight six times in 2009

January 15th, 2009

After a unanimous decision loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 90: “Cote vs. Silva” in October 2008 — and an epic spat between officials from his management team at Zinkin Entertainment/American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) and the promotion — the top welterweight contender’s future inside the Octagon was suddenly (and shockingly) a huge question mark.

No longer.

MMAmania.com can reveal that The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum recently agreed to a 20-month contract extension, which will keep him locked up until almost 2011.

“I feel that the extension is a good thing for me because I still have a job,” Koscheck quipped. “The UFC is the only show in town. If I wasn’t with them I would be a struggling fighter looking for work in a struggling country.”

Koscheck does not intend to sit back and smell the stale stench of his sweaty gym. On the contrary, the national collegiate wrestling champion intends to continue his blistering pace of taking fight after fight.

“There are a lot of reasons I want to fight so much,” he said. “I am in the gym all year around and I would rather be fighting then just training. The only way I make money is by fighting. So I told the UFC that I want to fight five or six times in 2009. I don’t care who I fight, anyone willing to step up I’ll be ready. I am a fighter and that’s what I love to do.”

Indeed, Koscheck most recently annihilated Yoshiyuki Yoshida — a very dangerous Japanese fighter — with a scary-looking two-punch knockout at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” on December 10. He defeated “Zenko” just six weeks after losing to number one division contender, Alves, in the “Windy City.”

He took the fight against the bruising Brazilian on less than 14 days notice to replace an injured Diego Sanchez. It didn’t go his way and he made no excuses for the loss, making it hard to hold it against him.

Koscheck got right back on the horse and does not appear to want to get off anytime soon, wanting to fight as often as possible to get back in the 170-pound title chase. The 13-fight UFC veteran will continue that chase against relative unknown and newcomer to the promotion, Paulo Thiago, at UFC 95 from The O2 Arena in London, England, on February 21.

It’s once again a risky move, taking on an opponent who not many will give him enough credit for defeating if he wins. But that doesn’t matter — Koscheck just wants to keep busy. And he will not allow himself to be a stepping stone for Thiago … or anyone else for that matter.

“Every fight is a dangerous fight when your in the UFC,” he said. “I have to train hard and not give this kid a chance to make his name off of me. The upside to fighting Paulo is that I get to fight!”

Koscheck has won three of his last four fights — he knocked off Dustin Hazelett and Chris Lytle before the Alves loss. With another win, combined with his unrivaled “gameness,” Koscheck could find himself once again on the short list of 170-pound title contenders sooner rather than later.

“I want to fight five to six times this year — I’ll be very unhappy if the UFC can’t get me fights,” he said. “I am happy to be back and I’m ready to fight.”

One down Feb. 21. Only five more to go … in 2009.

Josh Koscheck vs Paulo Thiago clash at UFC 95 in the works

January 5th, 2009

As MMAmania.com first reported over the weekend, top welterweight contender Josh Koscheck is expected to return to action at UFC 95 card, which is slated for The O2 Arena in London, England, on February 21.

We can now confirm that he is expected to welcome undefeated Brazilian up-and-comer, Paulo Thiago (7-0), to the Octagon for the first time ever. It’s important to note that bout agreements have been distributed but are still unsigned.

Koscheck most recently annihilated the very dangerous Japanese fighter, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” with a scary-looking two-punch knockout on December 10. He defeated “Zenko” just six weeks after losing to number one division contender Thiago Alves at UFC 90 via unanimous decision back on October 25.

He took the fight against the bruising Brazilian on less than 14 days notice to replace an injured Diego Sanchez. It didn’t go his way, but it’s hard to hold it against him.

The former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) has won three of his last four fights — he knocked off Dustin Hazelett and Chris Lytle before the Alves loss — and appears that he is willing to do whatever it takes — and fight as often as possible — to get back in the 170-pound title chase.

But he’ll have to do it against an opponent who is not well-known in the United States.

Thiago has competed primarily in his native Brazil, posting a four-fight win streak for the Jungle Fight promotion last year. He most recently stopped Luis Dutra Jr. via technical knockout (strikes) in round one of their bout in September 2008.

He’ll be thrown right into the deepend against Koscheck. It also appears to be a fight for Koscheck without much upside … unless of course he scores another sensational knockout on cable television in front of millions watching across the nation at home.

We shall see soon enough.

UFC 95 features the highly anticipated lightweight debut of Diego Sanchez against Joe Stevenson in the main event of the evening. Middleweights Nate Marquardt and Wilson Gouveia, as well as Demian Maia and Chael Sonnen, are also expected to mix it up in two very important division clashes.

Josh Koscheck next fight possible at UFC 95 in London Feb. 21

January 4th, 2009

Perhaps the biggest gamer in the welterweight division today, Josh Koscheck (12-3), will likely compete for the third time in four months when he participates on the upcoming UFC 95 card, which is slated for The O2 Arena in London, England, on February 21.

MMAmania.com learned this weekend that the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) member has been approached about beefing up an event that could need a little more of it. The promotion has done a nice job of filling up the card with solid match ups after the services of marquee attractions such as Chuck Liddell and Anderson Silva could not be secured, but the Spike TV special could use a little more star power.

And the addition of the collegiate national wrestling champion would do just that.

No possible opponent is known at this time, but it may not matter — Koscheck appears down to fight anyone. Based on our previous interviews with Koscheck, it would appear that this is the last fight on his contract.

Let’s hope that changes before he steps inside the Octagon once again on Feb. 21.

UFC 95 currently features the highly anticipated lightweight debut of Diego Sanchez against Joe Stevenson in the main event of the evening. Middleweights Nate Marquardt and Wilson Gouveia, as well as Demian Maia and Chael Sonnen, are also expected to mix it up in two very important division clashes.

UFC Quick Quote: Yoshiyuki Yoshida released from hospital after knockout loss

December 11th, 2008

“Tokyo’s Yoshida, who remained on the canvas while being tended to by commission doctors, was removed from the Octagon on a stretcher as a precautionary measure. He was later treated and released from a local hospital for a concussion.”

– Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today provided a medical update on Yoshiyuki Yoshida via its Web site. “Zenko” was brutally knocked unconscious last night during his main event welterweight tilt against Josh Koscheck at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” and was wheeled out of the Octagon on a stretcher as a precautionary measure. It was the first time ever the super tough Japanese standout was put to sleep. It was also the first time ever Koscheck scored such a decisive finish. Unfortunately, the result was the culmination of a night of carnage — Corey Hill (leg), Razak Al-Hussan (elbow/arm), Brandon Wolff (head) and Jonathan Goulet (head/knee) all sustained rather serious injuries. Get well soon.

Do or die: Josh Koscheck UFC Fight Night 16 interview exclusive with MMAmania.com

December 10th, 2008

Josh Koscheck doesn’t like losing.

After back-to-back wins over Dustin Hazelett and Chris Lytle , Koscheck came off the bench to replace an injured Diego Sanchez on just two weeks notice to battle rising star Thiago Alves at UFC 90 back on October 25.

He didn’t win.

Now — less than six weeks removed from the loss — the former collegiate national champion wrestler is slated to headline UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” against the very dangerous Japanese fighter, Yoshiyuki Yoshida.

That’s a tough fight for anyone in the welterweight division … much less someone coming off a loss to the bruising Brazilian.

Koscheck knows what is at stake — he put himself in this position. And now he feels as if his back is up against the wall. He needs to win or risk dropping farther back in the pack in the very competitive 170-pound title contender chase.

We recently caught up with the former contestant on the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) to get his thoughts on the Alves fight, how he plans to topple “Zenko” later tonight, who he feels is the next 155-pound champion, contract issues and much, much more.

Let’s get to it:
