Neil Grove vs Justin McCully UFC 95 fight possible Feb. 21

January 10th, 2009

Highly touted British heavyweight Neil Grove (7-1) will make his debut for the Zuffa-owned promotion against three-fight Octagon veteran Justin McCully (9-4-2) at UFC 95, which is slated to take place at The O2 Arena in London, England, on February 21, according to a recent report.

Grove recently signed a four-fight deal to compete in the UFC. Before that he was a regular on the Cage Rage fight circuit for the last couple of years. While fighting for the British promotion he compiled a solid record (4-1) with the lone loss coming at the hands of Rob Broughton via majority decision at Cage Rage 25: “Bring It On” last March.

All four of those wins were first or second round stoppages due to strikes. In fact, all seven of his career wins have been by some form of knockout. He likes to swing for the fences and is capable of ending a fight at anytime.

McCully, on the other hand, uses a more methodical approach to winning fights. He wears on his opponents with a strong wrestling base and then usually tries to end fights with his solid submission game.

The 32-year-old Team Punishment product has had some decent success as of late. He’s won four of his last five fights, including two of three in the Octagon since returning to action from a three-year hiatus in 2006.

He defeated talented striker Antoni Hardonk at Ultimate Fight Night 9 by unanimous decision in April of 2007, then lost to Gabriel Gonzaga by first round submission at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” over a year later. “The Insane One” most recently grinded out another unanimous decision victory over Eddie Sanchez at “Fight For The Troops” in December.

Basically this fight is a match of contrasting styles. So whoever can execute their gameplan the best on February 21 will likely leave London a winner.

UFC 95 is scheduled to be headlined by a lightweight main event between Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez and Joe “Daddy” Stevenson. To check out the latest fight card and rumors click here.

UFC 86 medical suspensions and injuries from NSAC

July 8th, 2008

ufc 86 medical suspensions
Lacerations were the name of the game at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, this past weekend.

Or as Joe Rogan so eloquently put it in the fight between Josh Koscheck and Chris Lytle … a goat’s vagina.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued its medical suspensions for the pay-per-view (PPV) event that took place on Saturday, July 5, revealing that Forrest Griffin, Chris Lytle, Cole Miller and Justin Buchholz all got cut and will need to take some time off to heal.

It was also no surprise that former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will have to undergo a battery of tests on his left leg before he can return to action.

Here’s the complete list of injuries and their medical instructions:

Forrest Griffin –- The new champion must clear a right upper eyelid laceration with a doctor or there is no contest until September 4.

Quinton Jackson – “Rampage” must have his left knee, tibia, fibia and thumb x-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic doctor or there will be no contest until January 2, 2009. He will have to ride out a minimum suspension until at least August 5 and there is no contact allowed until July 27.

Josh Koscheck -– He will have to serve a minimum suspension until August 5 for undisclosed reasons.

Chris Lytle — Lytle will have to have his right eye lacerations cleared by a doctor or there is no contest until September 4.

Marcus Aurelio –- “Maximus” must have a possible left thumb ligament injury cleared by orthopedic doctor or he will be unable to compete until January 2, 2009. His minimum suspension (no contest) will last until August 5 and contact is prohibited until July 27.

Justin McCully –- “The Insane One” must have his left shoulder cleared by an orthopedic doctor or there will be no contest until January 2, 2009.

Cole Miller -– He must have facial lacerations cleared by a doctor or there will be no contest allowed until September 4.

Jorge Gurgel –- He must have his right tibia, fibia and elbow x-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic doctor or there will be no contest allowed until January 2, 2009.

Dennis Siver -– He is suspended until at least August 20 and there is no contest allowed until August 5.

Justin Buchholz -– He must have a scalp laceration cleared by a doctor or there will be no contest allowed until September 4.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

UFC Quick Quote: Gabriel Gonzaga road back to title shot starts at UFC 86

June 30th, 2008

gabriel gonzaga

“I need to come back with wins. I’ll fight anybody. My goal is to be the champion. When I get a title shot, this is my goal. I had a long way to go to get a title shot, and I’ll do it again. I believe I need a couple of wins. And then more and more fights I need to win…. I’m here. I’m training hard to come back with my best condition to give my best show to my fans. I need to come back with wins, but my goal is still to win a belt.”

– Former number one heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga tells Sherdog.com that he intends to once again challenge for the division championship. “Napao” lost his bid to claim the strap against Randy Couture at UFC 74: “Respect” in 2007. He followed that up with another loss to Fabricio Werdum earlier this year. Now he’s set to take on Justin McCully at UFC 86: “Griffin vs. Jackson” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5. The journey begins all over again. Can he make it?

Gabriel Gonzaga vs Justin McCully UFC 86 fight set for Las Vegas

June 4th, 2008

UFC 86 Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Justin McCully

Heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga (8-3) and Justin McCully (8-3-2) are penciled in to tangle at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Gonzaga is on a two-fight skid since smashing Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 70: “Nations Collide” with a devastating fight-ending head kick back in April 2007.

He earned a title shot against then-division champion, Randy Couture, which he lost via technical knockout (strikes) in round three at UFC 74: “Respect.” “Napao” then failed to avenge the first loss of his career to Fabricio Werdum, losing to the Brazilian jiu-jitsu player via technical knockout just after two rounds at UFC 80: “Rapid Fire” earlier this year.

It’s been quite a fall from grace for the Team Link member — he was being touted as the next big thing in the heavyweight division after his upset of Cro Cop. Gonzaga will have his chance to get back on track against “The Insane One.”

McCully has not competed in more than one year. In his most recent fight at UFC Fight Night 9, McCully outpointed Antoni Hardonk on all three judges scorecards en route to a unanimous decision win.

Even though he has not seen any action since April 2007, McCully has been linked to possible match ups against Cheick Kongo and Frank Mir while on hiatus. However, the Team Punishment camp member just returned from a USO tour in Iraq when the Kongo bout was proposed and the Mir fight was scratched when the former champion was tapped to coach on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).

Gonzaga and McCully share strengths (jiu-jitsu), which makes this a tough fight for McCully. That’s because Gonzaga more than likely has the tighter ground game, as well as marked edge in the stand up.

But as we all know anything can and often does happen in mixed martial arts. That’s the reason the fighters fight in the fights.
