Report: UFC 91 PPV buys top 1 million — second biggest haul ever for promotion

December 11th, 2008

It was billed as the “biggest fight in UFC history.”

And if pay-per-view (PPV) buys are the barometer for success then UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15 appears to have been just that … almost.

Dave Meltzer from WrestlingObserver.com, which several weeks ago projected a buy rate of about 800,000 based on early trends, now reports that “Couture vs. Lesnar” scored about 1,010,000 buys. Therefore, UFC 91 falls just shy of the mark set by UFC 66 in 2006, which featured a showdown between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, netting the record for most buys with around 1,050,000.

Cha-ching!

We’re not mathematicians, but is you multiply the PPV by number by around $44.95 then you have a pretty juicy profit. And that doesn’t even count tickets sales, merchandise, etc.

Accordingly, UFC 91 should be considered a massive win for the promotion — especially when you consider the current state of the economy.

It also clearly indicates that new UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar is a box office drawing behemoth, bringing in a whole new legion of interested of viewers thanks in large part to his days as a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar not too long ago.

UFC 91 sold 10,845 tickets for a live gate $4,815,675, according to The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) . The promotion dished out $1,118,000 in UFC 91 fighter salaries for the pay-per-view (PPV) event, as well as $240,000 in additional bonus money for four participants who delivered outstanding performances.

Lesnar defeated Randy Couture via second round technical knockout to capture the heavyweight crown in the UFC 91 main event. Kenny Florian toppled Joe Stevenson with a first round submission in the co-featured bout of the evening, reinforcing his position as the clearcut number one title contender in the 155-pound division.

In fact, UFC President Dana White guaranteed Florian a title shot against lightweight champion BJ Penn in the near future. However, he may have to wait his turn because Penn — if he defeats Georges St. Pierre on January 31 to regain his welterweight title — will first fight Thiago Alves in a 170-pound title fight.

UFC 91 drug test results come back clean from NSAC for ‘Couture vs. Lesnar’

December 2nd, 2008

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today confirmed that the entire field of fighters tested for drugs and illegal substances prior to their clash at UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” on Saturday, November 15, have all come back clean.

UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, Randy Couture, Demian Maia, Nate Quarry, Aaron Riley, Jorge Gurgel, Mark Bocek and Alvin Robinson were all tested several weeks out from fight night, as well as on fight night, to eliminate the possibilities of “cycling off” performance enhancers such as steroids.

This is real good news, considering the spate of tests that have come back dirty in the past 12 months or so. Testing fighters so early and often before and on fight night is a proactive and unique measure — often referred to as the new “out of competition” testing policy — that the NSAC has adopted to curtail and prevent the use of banned substances.

It is merely an extra layer of protection to ensure good clean fights when it comes time to bang.

UFC 91 sold 10,845 tickets for a live gate $4,815,675, according to the NSAC.

UFC 91 PPV buys for ‘Couture vs Lesnar’ appear ‘big’

November 26th, 2008

It was billed as the “biggest fight in UFC history,” but if pay-per-view (PPV) buys are the barometer for success then UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15 appears to have come up a bit short.

Slightly.

Dave Meltzer from WrestlingObserver.com reports:

“Based on numbers we’ve gotten, there are places where it was just slightly below UFC 66 (the record setter which did 1,050,000 buys) and it looks to have beaten UFC 61 (Shamrock vs. Ortiz, 775,000) for second place. It looks to be No. 3 in Canada behind UFC 79 (Silva vs. Liddell; St. Pierre vs. Hughes) and UFC 83 (St. Pierre vs. Serra) but ahead of St. Pierre vs. Fitch and Lesnar vs. Herring in August. That would indicate most likely topping 800,000 buys.”

While it will likely fall short of UFC President Dana White’s pre-event prediction of a record-setting 1.2 million buys, UFC 91 should be considered a big win for the promotion — especially when you consider the current state of the economy.

It also clearly indicates that new UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar is a massive box office draw, bringing in a whole new legion of interested of viewers thanks in large part to his days as a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar not too long ago.

UFC 91 sold 10,845 tickets for a live gate $4,815,675, according to The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) . Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture sounds off on life before, during and after UFC 91

November 26th, 2008

Just a little over a week after his historical fight with Brock Lesnar at UFC 91, mixed martial arts legend and five-time UFC champion Randy Couture was the featured guest on MMAmania.com’s exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio.

And ‘The Natural’ didn’t disappoint.

It was just two months ago that Randy agreed to make his much-celebrated return to the Octagon to defend the championship belt he no longer wanted following a bitter contract dispute that forced his shocking retirement from the UFC.

Like most break-ups, things started getting ugly after some contractual mud started slinging between the two sides. Couture was painted as a money-grubbing diva, interested only in himself and a superfight with the world’s greatest heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko.

The UFC on the other hand was portrayed as the evil empire, crushing dreams and fighter bonuses beneath the wheels of corporate slavery. Of course there are always two sides to every story, but as ‘The Natural’ explains, things were problematic from the very beginning.

“It started when Zuffa bought the company, I ended up in a rhubarb with them over the ancillary rights back then. I was one of the few guys that had managers and agents that came from the Hollywood team that understood what those ancillary rights were and what they were worth. At the time I was the heavyweight champion so we weren’t just going to sign and give those things away - and that created an issue.”

Ancillary rights in the case of the UFC are the rights to use a fighter’s name, likeness or image and to promote and profit from that usage. They can be used in the production of spin-off products such as action figures, posters, DVD’s, T-shirts, and even video games - and can be incredibly lucrative (C. Osbourne, 2008).

Ancillary rights are a difficult thing to surrender, because the value of those rights in the long term are often hard to predict, especially in a sport that continues to evolve and become more profitable, like the UFC.

Does the Jon Fitch fiasco ring a bell?

Not rolling over on command didn’t sit well with the Zuffa brass, and Couture thinks that may have been a precursor to future tensions later on.

“I think that set the tone for Zuffa kind of not feeling like I was one of their guys. At that time Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes - those were all kind of their guys, they just signed everything over to them and let them do everything. I was still trying to control some of my stuff. I think that kind of irritated them. They pulled me out of that initial ad campaign with Carmen Electra, they pulled me out of the video game at that time, and I think that just set a tone that carried through that I felt like I was operating against.”

Those early roots may come as a surprise to some fans, who felt Randy was leaving because the UFC’s efforts to sign former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko included offering him a blank check. While it wasn’t the sole reason Randy walked, it may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“The Fedor thing was a whole other thing. I was offended at that time the amount of money that was being thrown at [Fedor], at Cro Cop and some of these other guys coming from PRIDE. [Those guys] hadn’t really been there knocking it out and selling tickets and pay-per-views for the company for as long as a lot of us other guys had been.”

More than a year after walking out on the UFC, Randy knew that at his age the window for competing at the top level was getting smaller and smaller. The UFC was open to negotiations, and the time was right for both sides to try and make amends.

“At some point both sides kind of had to let things go. I wanted to get back to fighting. I could have spent another year toiling away, spending a lot of money and still not getting to fight Fedor or anybody else. You kind of have to weigh that out. The best idea for me was to try to come back, make amends and compete. You don’t want to cut your nose off to spite your face.”

Couture does not regret his decision to leave, but was concerned about how it would affect his fans.

“I hesitate always to mention money as an issue because then you sound like some spoiled athlete, you start to sound like Terrell Owens.”

No matter. All was forgiven when Randy returned in September to face the UFC’s newest heavyweight heel in Brock Lesnar, fresh off a three-round mauling of talented striker Heath Herring.

Couture went down in the second round after a flying ham-hock put him on his back. He didn’t make excuses, nor does he attribute anything that happened inside the Octagon to his time away from competition.

“I don’t think the time away was an issue. I wasn’t in any position where I wasn’t doing what I trained to do. The outcome wasn’t what I wanted but the performance was. I never felt overwhelmed by Brock. He’s a big, strong guy, no doubt about that. I felt like things were going my way, things were working, not that it was easy. I slipped that right hand but I didn’t slip it enough, he had about another four inches on his reach - and his fist is about three inches wider than most people.

Randy doesn’t remember getting hit. Aside from the stoppage, he didn’t sustain any damage and actually goes against the popular belief that Mario Yamasaki had a “Better-late-than-never” approach to stopping the fight.

“He hit me right behind the ear. It was a flash (KO). One second we were in the flurry the next second I was on the ground and I wasn’t really sure what had happened. I don’t think there was anything wrong with the stoppage. I appreciated that Yamasaki gave me some time to recover.”

Now that Couture is back, the big question is where he goes from here. There has been speculation that he could meet Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell for a fourth time in 2009, but for Randy it’s still too early to contemplate his next move.

“I have two more fights left on my contract. I’m taking it one fight at a time. I don’t know what I want to do. I would certainly like to fight Brock again, but I’m just kind of letting all this settle. I’m sure the inkling and the idea will come to me. I don’t want to make any rash decisions or do anything silly. I just want to see what presents itself and we’ll go from there.”

One of the things that has presented itself is a life outside of fighting. After successful roles in Hollywood movies like David Mamet’s Redbelt and The Scorpion King, Couture has been bitten by the acting bug and looks forward to the challenges that Hollywood presents.

“I’ve got a lot of other things going on, several other movie projects coming down the pike. It’s gonna be a very, very good year this next year. I’m trying to be smart and pick the right kinds of parts and pictures. I don’t want to just be a thug and a fighter. I would really like to play some characters and do some things that are different. I’m very intrigued by the movie process and all that stuff and it’s certainly a lot easier than getting punched in the head.”

Black-eyed pea: A conversation with UFC lightweight Jeremy Stephens

November 24th, 2008

jeremy stephens
UFC lightweight competitor Jeremy Stephens (14-3) threw a devastating uppercut in the second round of his lightweight battle at UFC 91: "Couture vs Lesnar" that not only sent opponent Rafael Dos Anjos crashing to the floor, but also brought the fans in attendance and at home straight out of their seats.

It was a jaw-dropping ending to a fight that Stephens admits wasn’t exactly heading in the direction he was hoping for when things first got underway.

"He took me down. I really wasn’t expecting for him to take me down. He’s really strong. I was trying to get back up, but he had really, really tight jiu-jitsu. I couldn’t move. I’ve been working on getting up but he left no spaces. He did a good job holding me down. Once I was able to reverse, I made a mistake and he capitalized on it. But you know I’m not going to tap. I’ve got too much heart, too much on the line."

Stephens credits his tremendous heart to more than just his training and iron will. "Lil’ Heathen" has his roots in a state that’s been a breeding ground for some of the UFC’s top fighters, including former UFC welterweight champion Pat Miletich.

"515 (area code) that’s my city: Des Moines, Iowa. If you throw a dart in the middle of the United States it would actually land on Des Moines, Iowa. That’s why we say we have a lot of heart because Des Moines, Iowa is the heart of the United States."

After his uppercut sent dos Anjos to the land of heavy eyelids, an elated Stephens was overcome with joy, running face-first into the side of the cage - much to the crowd’s enjoyment.

"[The moment was] explosive as you could probably tell. I ran into the cage! I was just so hyped up. I have so much going on in my life and it was like I was reborn again. It felt really great."

The bout against dos Anjos, Stephens fifth under the UFC banner, was a culmination of five months of hard work and determination spent trying to rebound from his unanimous decision loss to Spencer Fisher back at The Ultimate Fighter Finale 7 in June of 2008.

That preparation sent him all over the country to train with some of some of the UFC’s most recognizable fighters and trainers.

"I met up with Hermes Franca. I flew out to San Diego to Saulo Ribeiro’s gym. We trained with Diego Sanchez a little bit. Went up to Throwdown Elite and trained with Baret Yoshida – not with Baret but with his gym and War Machine (former UFC fighter Jon Koppenhaver). I was moving around a lot, then I went back to Davenport to finish up training and then I met Hermes a week before the fight out in Vegas."

Despite hurting his foot at UFC 91, Stephens doesn’t plan on taking any extended time off away from the gym. His goal is to ride the momentum from his exciting KO at UFC 91 right into his next bout.

"The first round I kicked him and it kind of messed up my foot. I’m going to take this week off then on Monday I’m going to get right back into the gym. I expect to perform here very soon. Josh Neer and Hermes Franca were both in my corner and they are going to be fighting in February. I’m hoping to spend a lot of time with those guys and train and fight maybe on the same card or afterward."

Stephens has dedicated himself to his craft and understands that it demands time away from friends and family. But he also understands that it’s exactly those kind of sacrifices that will elevate him to the next level of mixed martial arts, in turn helping him support his family through a successful career.

"[Cindy] is my girlfriend of a little bit over a year. Tuesday she flew into Vegas and that week was our one year (anniversary) and she is currently pregnant. She is a little bit over four months and in two weeks we are going to get an ultrasound and find out what sex our baby is. She is a real big help she is always there for me and it was all work for our baby so I had to give her a shout-out (after the fight)."

Aside from girlfriend Cindy, Stephens also gives thanks to his mother for helping him become the man he is today, including branding him with his nickname "Lil’ Heathen".

"When I was a little kid I was more of a wild man I guess. That is the only way she could describe me. I spent a lot of time with her when I was younger. She definitely made me the best."

Being the best is Stephens ultimate goal. His thrilling win over Rafael dos Anjos was a big step in the right direction in his ascension to the top of the lightweight division.

Just don’t expect another victory collision with the Octagon walls.

"It left me with a black eye."
