Jackson Vs Jardine: Can the “Dean of Mean” handle the “Rampage”?
By John Gagne
This Saturday we have a very intriguing match up in the UFC light heavyweight division. Keith Jardine is facing off against Quinton Jackson. If this fight doesn’t have the potential to be a slugfest I don’t know what does. A lot rides on this match. It may catapult Jardine to title contention. Which Jardine has already stated he will not fight his friend Rashad Evans current UFC light heavyweight champ. So this win may see the return of Jardine to the heavyweight division. Unless Lyoto Machida is next in line, and can knock off Rashad it doesn’t appear to be a great scenario for Jardine. We also have a chance for Jackson to gain his second title shot. I know the match up I want to see is Jackson vs. Evans.
There will be a few main factors that will help determine the outcome of this fight. The first being the ability for Jardine to confuse his opponents with his awkward and sometimes “herky jerky” style, if Jardine can do that it will be a long night for Jackson.
The second is Jackson’s sheer aggression. He comes out guns blazing looking for any way to win the fight except maybe a submission. If he can stay inside, push the pace and block Jardine’s low kicks I think the night looks good for Jackson.
The third is momentum, and both guys are coming off very big wins. While Jackson’s was much more impressive and propelled him much higher up in the light heavyweight division. Even though a win is a win, Jardine was not that impressive against a slipping Brandon Vera. If you base this fight on the last fights of each guy, hands down Jackson takes this.
Both of these competitors have the chance to put on a great show. But we have seen these guys perform worse than there capabilities on a few occasions. I would not put a win past either man, but Jackson just brings more to the table. Jackson takes the win via TKO in the fourth minute of the second round.
If you are looking to bet on this fight the odds are not very favorable for us. With Jackson being a pretty heavy favorite at -350. I would stay away unless you don’t mind putting up $1050 to make 300. I know my confidence in “Rampage” is high enough to take that, but is yours?

ULTIMATE FIGHT NIGHT: LAUZON VS. STEPHENS
By John Gagne
This fight does not have the potential to be a ground battle like the Franca vs. Lauzon. But what it does have is two tough as nails fighters, who are looking to move up the UFC lightweight ranks. This fight will be a battle. Each fighter brings a different game to the table.
Joe Lauzon started off his career as a premier grappler for NAGA or the North American Grappling Association. These grappling events featured Joe in many tough superfights. He also made a name for him self in the New England MMA scene at a very young age.
Joe didn’t get his big break until UFC 63. Where we saw Joe TKO MMA legend Jens “Little Evil” Pulver. Joe also holds a victory over WEC featherweight champ Mike Thomas Brown. Joe has only seen defeat two times in his career in the octagon. The first was against fellow New Englander Kenny “Ken Flo” Florian. And the second loss was Manny Gamburyan in the semi-finals of TUF 5.
Jeremy Stephens is no slouch. He is a tough guy that’s very well rounded. Besides Spencer Fisher, I believe Joe Lauzon will be he toughest test in UFC. Most of Jeremy’s victories are via TKO or KO. Knowing that we can all assume he wants a stand up war. Even though Joe Lauzon has improved his striking. I feel the edge goes to Stephens.
However Jeremy Stephens has suffered two of his three losses by submission. If you look at Joes record on the other hand. He has most of his wins via submission. It will be interesting to see how this fight unfolds. Can Joe Lauzon get Stephens down? I think so, that’s why I am taking him in the second round rear naked choke or heel hook.
The odds for this fight are pretty good. The bookmakers are not making Joe a huge favorite. I would take him hands down.

Can “C-4” Blow Up “The Cowboy?”
By John Gagne
This fight stylistically is interesting. “The Cowboy” has a striking background and “C-4” likes to stay in the pocket and bang. We all saw Varner out strike “Razor” Rob to attain the WEC Lightweight Title. It will be interesting to see how the stand up war will pan out. Will the boxing style of Varner prevail or will “The Cowboy’s” kickboxing keep him at bay.
These two also have good ground games. “The Cowboy” finished most of his fights via submission. While Varner has a great pedigree in wrestling and trains with current WEC champ Carlos Condit. Who is a bigger, better version of Cerrone. A lot has also been said about Cerrone training at Greg Jackson’s. Working out with one of the best camps in the US, as well as many top fighters will help Cerrone. However having great training partners is great, only if you have the same potential as them. I do not see Cerrone benefiting as much as people will think training with Team Jackson.
This fight will be a little bit of a war. I think the first two rounds will be Varner getting used to Cerrone’s size. And the third will start to show Varner getting the best of Cerrone, on his way to a late 3rd or mid 4th round stoppage via TKO.
The odds in this fight are pretty good. Even though Varner is the favorite. The bookmakers have not set him as a heavy favorite. I would take Varner for sure.
