WEC: BROWN vs GARCIA (REVIEW)

 By John Gagne

Last night we saw an amazing performance by Mike Brown. He has now defeated a top contender and may be called a true champion now. However, the show put on by Leonard Garcia was anything but impressive. He looked over confident and left himself open for that huge right hand the sent him to the mat. I am sure he will learn from this and become a much stronger fighter, just as he did after losing to Roger Huerta in the UFC.

Ricardo Lamas put on a great show with amazing wrestling skills and top control that led him to a decision vicorty over Bart Palaszewski. This should jump Lamas up in the WEC ranks, one or two more fights at this level he should get a title shot.

Jose Aldo looked great in his fight, as did Damacio Page. Both guys came out throwing heavy leather and ended up landing big shots. Hopefully we will see another step up in competition for these two,

With the worst fight of the night going to Rob McCullough and Marcus Hicks, both men looked lazy. There was about 3 minutes of actual action in this fight, then a lot of moving around the ring with nothing much more to add. I think they need to put Rob in a fight with a more aggressive fighter first. If the WEC wants to give him another title shot. With his performance last night he is not ready.

As for my picks I went 8 for 10 bringing me back up in to the high 70% range. While my betting advice stayed the same with 77%, I will look to the next UFC to improve on both of my averages.

WEC 38: FIGHT REVIEW AND JOHN’S RESULTS

WEC 38: FIGHT REVIEW AND JOHN’S RESULTS

By John Gagne

Last night was a night the MMA world will not soon forget. The main event ended in controversial fashion. The Champ Jaime Varner won a split decision. When an “illegal” blow to a downed opponent caused the fight to stop prematurely. Apparently when this happens in California. The CSAC has rules in place. These rules stop the fight, then the fight judged on the completed rounds.  The judging is another problem I had with this situation. I, along with 90% of the MMA world scored Varner 10’s all four rounds, and Cerrone 9’s. A win is a win and I am sure Varner was still happy leaving with a belt, even with a broken hand.

Jens Pulver looked unimpressive in his second straight fight. It really upsets me to see a legend like that, get taken out so quickly by Urijah Faber. Not taking anything from Faber at all. I just know Jens has more fight than he displayed.

A pretty big upset also took place on this WEC card. We saw Hiromitsu Miura get TKO’s by heavy underdog Edgar Garcia. After Miura’s decent showing against WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit, a lot more was expected from him.

For this card John had six correct picks out of ten fights. Now bringing his winning percentage to 68% down three percentage points. Check back for John’s latest picks, and his UFC 94 fight predictions and betting advice.

Can “C-4” Blow Up “The Cowboy?” VARNER VS CERRONE FIGHT PREDICTION AND BETTING ADVICE

January 25th, 2009

Can “C-4” Blow Up “The Cowboy?”

By John Gagne

This fight stylistically is interesting. “The Cowboy” has a striking background and “C-4” likes to stay in the pocket and bang. We all saw Varner out strike “Razor” Rob to attain the WEC Lightweight Title. It will be interesting to see how the stand up war will pan out. Will the boxing style of Varner prevail or will “The Cowboy’s” kickboxing keep him at bay.

These two also have good ground games. “The Cowboy” finished most of his fights via submission. While Varner has a great pedigree in wrestling and trains with current WEC champ Carlos Condit. Who is a bigger, better version of Cerrone. A lot has also been said about Cerrone training at Greg Jackson’s. Working out with one of the best camps in the US, as well as many top fighters will help Cerrone. However having great training partners is great, only if you have the same potential as them. I do not see Cerrone benefiting as much as people will think training with Team Jackson.

This fight will be a little bit of a war. I think the first two rounds will be Varner getting used to Cerrone’s size. And the third will start to show Varner getting the best of Cerrone, on his way to a late 3rd or mid 4th round stoppage via TKO.

The odds in this fight are pretty good. Even though Varner is the favorite. The bookmakers have not set him as a heavy favorite. I would take Varner for sure.
